About the app
What is a cosmic calendar?
It’s a way to understand the scale of cosmic history by compressing the age of the universe into one year. The Big Bang is January 1, and the present is the end of December 31. Carl Sagan popularized this perspective.
How do I navigate the timeline?
Swipe vertically to move between events, or use the timeline control. The scale changes from months to days and hours as you approach the present. Open an event to read more, or use Search to find one directly.
Are the dates exact?
Many dates in cosmic history are estimates. The app marks approximate events and includes sources so you can explore the science behind them. Calendar positions use a universe age of 13.8 billion years.
Can I turn off the animated backgrounds?
Yes. Open Settings and turn on Static to use the simpler patterned view with emoji instead of background video.
Which devices are supported?
Cosmic Calendar is available for iPhone and iPad. The Android release is currently in review on Google Play. Check the store listing for the operating system requirements for your device.
